Parent-Taught Drivers Education – This program was created and authorized by the Iowa Legislature for parents who wish to teach driver education to their own children. Costs for course materials are set by the approved vendors and vary according to the course selected and the type of material chosen (written versus online). Kirkwood Community College – Classes are offered during the school year. The cost is $400 and subject to change. There is an additional $25 program fee for fuel and maintenance. The $25 is required of every student and is not subject to free and reduced lunch status. Students must have their driving permit prior to starting the class.
Street Smarts – Classes are offered at various locations in the Cedar Rapids area. These classes run during the school year as well as the summer. The cost is approximately $400 and subject to change.
Right Way Drivers Education – Classes are offered in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. These classes run at various times throughout the year. Their program is unique as their approach is to complete the course in a 10 day window. The cost is approximately $400 and subject to change.
Safe Driver Drivers Education – Safe Driver Driver’s Education combines online classroom instruction with hands-on driving practice in a variety of settings to help students gain the confidence to drive safely and confidently.
Families who are eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch/Fees should contact the company to inquire about how to waive fees.
School License/Permit – Students who have completed a Driver Education course but have not yet received their full drivers license may apply for a Minors School License (aka School Permit). Students with this license may only drive to and from school. The application form requires a signature from a school official (typically the principal), which can typically be signed within one school day. Please bring completed/signed application forms to the Main Office. In addition there is a parent/guardian consent form that must accompany the license application.
